The Whaling Wanderers of New Bedford is a clique devoted to preserving the grand tales of the city’s maritime past. Members gather in wharves-turned-coffeehouses to recite Moby Dick passages and debate the superiorities of various whaling techniques. Newcomers are educated in the ceaseless struggle between man and leviathan. Beyond their literary pursuits, they organize reenactments of historic whaling endeavors, complete with archaic harpoons and period costumes.
