The Museum is situated within the 1881 church built for the patients of Bristol’s the 1861 purpose built mental health hospital. The stained glass & alter carving were designed to give the patients hope & believe in the possibility of recovery. Our unique & extraordinary collection of objects, & photographs create a vivid picture of life & work in three former hospitals: mental health, orthopaedic & learning disability. First, the psychiatric hospital for over a 1000 patients which closed in 1994. Second, the asylum was transformed into Beaufort War Hospital (1915 - 1919) specialising in orthopaedics. The First World War exhibition tells the story of the people, including the orderly & artist Stanley Spencer, who were there. The third hospital story is that of the iconic yellow Dower House in Stoke Park, Bristol, which opened as a Learning Disability hospital in 1909 & closed in 1997. The Museum is open Wednesday morning 10am-1pm & Saturday 10am–4pm. £5 annual ticket (children free).
