The Irish Potato Famine, also called The Great Hunger was the greatest single peacetime tragedy in western europe since the 14th century black death. This museum tells the story of what happened. Ireland was part of the British Empire at that time, yet at least a million people died of starvation and disease and millions more were forced to emigrate. This year's exhibition includes a museum artefact. Spread across several rooms, the 50 posters and 15 minute film contain 19th century photographs, maps, sketches and contemporary eye witness accounts. You will learn how inadequate Government relief measures contributed to the disaster and how eviction and emigration dramatically reduced the population. Emigration from Ireland continued at a great pace after the Famine. In fact in the period 1856 to 1914, over 4 million people left Ireland. 2020 marks the 175th anniversary of the beginning of the Famine in 1845.
