Daruma Temple in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture is considered the origin of daruma dolls. A daruma street fair is held on January 6-7 there each year. The origin dates back to the great famine of the Tenmei era (1781-1789). The ninth generation abbot of the temple used a single-stroke drawing of a daruma created by Zen priest Shin'etsu and carved a wooden doll as a prayer for the release of the farmers from suffering. He then taught the locals how to create these dolls, and they began to appear at the Nanakusa Taisai. Today, over fifty homes produce the dolls, and they are sent nationwide as a propitious emblem of overcoming struggle -- or, as the Japanese say, tumbling seven times and picking oneself up eight times.
