Yamamoto Nohgakudo Theater

In the past, for more than 200 years Yamamoto family managed one of the big five government loan-exchange companies at Karasuma Sanjo, Kyoto. The family even sponsored the procedure of transferring the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Noh mask that the Yamamoto family gave as a present to the Suzuka-yama carriage of the Gion Festival in 1718 is still venerated as an object of worship today. Yamamoto Noh Theater was founded by Yamamoto Hiroyuki in 1927. Burned down by the fires of WW2, it was rebuilt in 1950 and is currently the oldest existing Noh theatre in Osaka. Situated in the city center it stands out with its traditional wooden three-story construction. Since the theatre has maintained the tradition of Noh for many years, it was registered as a Japan's Tangible Cultural Heritage in 2006. Only a few minutes walk from Osaka Castle, Yamamoto Noh Theater preserves the appeal of the art of Noh, cherished by the samurai class for hundreds of years.
